Beyond comparing the fluid timepieces in the painting to melting camembert, the painter has offered little to no insight into the meaning behind the piece. ![]() The artistic and literary movement which was born as a response to WW1 can be summarized by a quote from one of the movement’s co-founders André Breton: “Surrealism is based on the belief in the superior reality of certain forms of previously neglected associations, in the omnipotence of dream, in the disinterested play of thought.”ĭalí was a leading figure in the movement due to his uncanny ability to depict fantastical landscapes and ideas in a believable and realistic manner. The Surrealism movement was well underway by 1931 when “The Persistence of Memory” was released. Dalí’s infamous painting unsettles the viewer not because it contains any particularly gory or disturbing content, but rather it suggests a weakness in a system that was once regarded as infallible.
